An introduction to forest ecology (KS3 - KS5)
aim of this half/full day visit is to introduce students to practical
examples of some of the key ecological principles they have covered in
theory and to extend their knowledge by looking at a forest ecosystem.
We will explore:
Energy flow within the ecosystem - producers and consumers.
The role of detritivores and decomposers in nutrient cycles
Succession and the development of woodland since the last glaciation
Habitats within the forest system
The importance of mycorrhizal associations in forest systems
